Yesterday, Sunday, my wife and I went on a road trip. For those who don’t know, we live in northwestern Vermont, just outside a town five miles from the Canadian border. Yes, I can see Canada from my house.
We moved here almost three years ago, but we have not been able to explore much of the state. We moved here with a 13-year-old Greyhound and could not go anywhere overnight. Reasons.
Fastener (Fast) went to the Rainbow Bridge as a 14-year-old, and after some grieving (we still do), we did our first tour of Vermont. We went around the perimeter of the state.

On Sunday, we went on a day trip through the Mad River Valley, named after the Mad River that runs through it. If you look at a map, Highway 100 is in the middle of the state, running north and south, and that highway mostly follows the Mad River. It is the favorite route tourists use during ‘Peeping’ when the gorgeous fall colors come to Vermont. Why Vermonters call it peeping is beyond me.
We went 45 miles south to Burlington for breakfast, then over and then down Highway 100, eventually coming home a different way. It was an 8-hour road trip with a few stops.
It was wonderful.
It was immersive.
It was communication with my wife.
And some good food.
What does this have to do with navigating corporate?
How many of you are still thinking about working on your days off? Quite a few.
But if you think about your work when you are not working, you never get the break you need to reset, recover, and give yourself the ability to create.
Having that immersive time away from work, even if it is just one day, is important for mitigating work stress, getting work out of your head, and returning to work refreshed.
Maybe a road trip isn’t for you. But do something immersive for a day and see how much better you feel when you return to work.
Be a Cubicle Warrior,
